You have the right to one free credit report per year under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act of 2003.
There is only one official website: www.annualcreditreport.com. At this website, you can order a copy of all reports compiled by the three major credit reporting agencies which are Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union. This site can also be accessed through a link at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.ftc.com. You can also call to get your free credit report by calling toll free at 877-322-8228.
You will need to provide your name, address, social security number and date of birth. You will be asked to answer some authentication questions to make sure that it is you and not somebody else is trying to get your information, such as last know address, what city you previously resided in or who financed your auto loan.
There are alot of fake sites, so be on the lookout for the fake "free-credit-report" site that lures you into buying a credit monitoring service. The Federal Trade Commission has already identified at least 130 such sites. Here's the test: If you are asked for your credit card number, you are probably at a fake site. Pop up ads or email messages claiming to be for the official website is probably a scam.
When requesting for a free credit report make sure and get one from all three credit reporting agencies, which are Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union because the information listed with each agency somtimes vary due to factors such as wrong account numbers and out of date listings.
Unlike your credit report, information about your credit score is not free, however; it is very important. Your credit score can affect the ability to get loans, insurance premiums, and even applying for employment. Scores range from 300 to 850, are used to predict how likely you are to pay your bills on time. The higher the score, the better off you are. You can order a copy of your credit score, which is based on your credit history, from all three credit reporting agencies at: www.annualcreditreport.com
